Anyone would love to have a gardening deck made of wood but caring for them is as difficult as owning one. Tattered decks certainly don’t look good. One of the common reasons decks downgrade over time is negligence. However, when treated with proper maintenance, wooden decks may last twice as long.
In order to renew the decks yourself, you need to follow a process including repairing, cleaning and painting. Your first task is to inspect and find out the areas that need repair. Some areas may need minor repair whereas some areas may demand complete replacements. The parts that come in direct contact with the soil and water are highly prone to damage and thus need to be inspected time to time.
You can select one suitable deck cleaner and a brush according to your cleaning needs. Use two parts of water and one part or vinegar for cleaning. You may also put 2 tea bags in boiling water and use it as a cleaner; this will also add extra shine to your wooden deck. Once the cleaning is done make sure you leave the deck for some time to dry out before applying any paint.
Use transparent paint for new wood and semitransparent stains for old ones. It adds radiance as well as a protective layer on the deck protecting it from the harsh sun and damaging moisture. Use a sprayer as it leaves more paint on the deck rather a brush or rolling. Older wood needs more painting than the newer ones as they are dry and thus apply two to three coats on old deck. Apply the coats subsequently as the second coat will not be absorbed if the first one dries.
At last, check if the railings need replacement or polish. It is recommended to clean and paint the railings along with the deck so that your house will look completely revived.
